Across two workshops, Beverly Derewianka will work with participants to explore how we can support students’ writing achievement as they progress through the middle years, valuing the distinctive contributions of primary and secondary teachers. Across the two sessions we will focus on what evidence-based, explicit teaching and knowledge building actually look like in practice and how to embed the process of writing a text in an authentic curriculum task.
The Australian Curriculum (AC) requires students to become confident at comprehending and creating texts in all learning areas. The demands for comprehending and creating texts becomes increasingly complex across the transition from primary to secondary schools. This increasing complexity of curriculum demands includes engagement with multimodal and hybrid texts and discipline-specific ways of using language.

Beverly Derewianka is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She has worked in the field of Language Education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, and has spent over thirty years as a literacy/EAL teacher educator at the Undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral levels.
Beverly has acted as consultant to various curriculum bodies nationally and internationally, contributing to policy design and assessment procedures. She has written several extremely useful and much championed books for teachers based on her research into students’ literacy development. Her publications include Exploring How Texts Work, A (New) Grammar Companion: For Teachers, School Discourse: Learning to Write across the Years of Schooling (with Frances Christie) and Teaching Language in Context (with Pauline Jones).
Although officially retired, Beverly currently works with schools in all states of Australia and overseas supporting teachers in raising students’ literacy outcomes.
